January 2023 - Happy New Year! Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a good break. Thank you so much for the cards, kind words and presents we were given. They were all very much appreciated.
It's been lovely to see the children back this week. They've settled back in brilliantly and got on with their work enthusiastically. Our topics this term are Castles and the Seaside. We will use non-fiction texts to find out about castles throughout history and where you find them, in Geography. In Art and DT, we will have a go at sketching and painting castles, as well as making models of them in DT. In Science, we will be learning about Habitats, looking at local habitats, microhabitats around the school grounds and seaside habitats to compare what you would find living there. There is a plan attached below, to show what we will be covering in more detail.
Our Author in the Spotlight this term, is Jill Tomlinson, who wrote The Owl who was afraid of the Dark. If the children have any books written by her, that they would like to bring in to share, we would love to see them. We will carry on taking it in turns to bring in books on a Friday. We will let two children know each Thursday, when it's their turn.
Thank you to everyone who has had a turn with our Reading Scrapbook so far this year. We've been really impressed at what the children have added and it's great to see them enjoying their reading.
Our PE lessons will continue to be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and if PE kit could be labelled with your child's name, that would really help. Thank you.
As always, please don't hesitate to let us know if you need anything.

October 2022 - We've had another great Forest School session this afternoon, using apples, pumpkin seeds and twigs to make bird feeders. I was really proud of how well you listened and followed the instructions, Class 3. Well done.
|
September 2022 - We had a lovely afternoon doing Forest School activities today. The children used leaves, twigs and clay to make different creatures.
August 2022 - Hope you've all had a good Summer! We're looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday and hearing all about it.
This term we'll be learning about London, its landmarks, kings and queens and the Great Fire. We'll be finding out about materials and what properties they have in Science and reading the Creation Story in RE. We have some Forest School sessions planned, as well as some new PE activities.
We have PE on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, so if the children can continue to come to school in their PE kits on those days that would be great. Thank you. Please could they bring a water bottle with their name on, too.
We'll have an "Author in the Spotlight" each half term, starting with Michael Bond, who wrote the Paddington Bear stories. If the children have any stories written by him that they would like to share, we would love to see them. In addition to this, each Friday we will ask two of the children to bring in any book that they would like to share, whether a story, poems or non-fiction. We will add photos of these books to our Reading display to give ideas of good books to try. If the children are reluctant to bring in a book from home, that's fine. They can choose from the large selection we have at school.
We will keep you updated with things that are going on and ways to help your children, but if you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask, either send an email to our class address or catch us at the gate in the mornings.

June 2022 - Hope you've all had a lovely week and enjoyed some of the Jubilee celebrations. We're into our last half term, but still have lots of fun things to fit in!
The children have done some beautiful work on the book, "Grandad's Island" and are enjoying reading Julia Donaldson's stories, too.

April 2022 - Summer Term - Hope you've all had a lovely Easter break and managed to enjoy some of the beautiful weather. We're looking forward to hearing all about it and to another fun, busy term!
This term's theme is "Our wonderful world"/"Sensational Safari". We'll be using maps and globes to find out about different continents, their features and the animals that live there. We'll find out about famous explorers in history, such as Scott, Shackleton and Columbus, as well as some more recent adventurers. We'll listen to some African music and have a go at drumming, as well as using a range of media in Art to make stone art, animal sketches and pictures of the Northern Lights. In Science, our topic is Plants and we'll be trying some experiments to find out more about the conditions different seeds and bulbs need to grow healthily. Our Author in the Spotlight this term is Julia Donaldson, so if the children would like to bring any of her books to share with us, that would be great. Thank you! There is an overview of this term's topics and planning attached below, as well as the overview of what we'll be covering in Maths and English.
Children still need to come to school in their PE kit on PE days (Tuesdays and Wednesdays ). We are lucky enough to have some tennis sessions later this half term.
Children also need to have a pair of indoor shoes/plimsoles to change into and a waterproof coat and wellingtons or other waterproof shoes, as we will try to get outside as much as possible. We have some Forest School sessions coming up on Tuesday mornings this term too, with some fantastic outdoor learning activities.
Please try to make sure clothing and footwear is clearly labelled with your child's name.
Each child also needs a named drink bottle at school every day, as the water fountains cannot be used at the moment.
The children have loved sharing their favourite books throughout the year, so we are introducing a Reading Scrapbook this term, which each child will be given the opportunity to bring home and add a page about their favourite book or a book that they have enjoyed recently. More about that soon!
Don't hesitate to contact us if we can help, either on the class email or at the gate at the beginning or end of the day.
Thank you for all your support,
Jo Riddell and Kerry Trencher

This term is speeding by! The children are enjoying our new Author in the Spotlight - Michael Rosen. They loved his Chocolate Cake poem and wrote some fantastic versions of their own.
We all enjoyed our Book Week recently, focusing on the book "Mother Earth is weeping". The children produced some beautiful writing and art work and were all keen to find out what they could do to help look after our planet. We used the coding skills they had learnt to make some posters using Scratch, too.
Last week in RE, we found out about the Jewish festival of Sukkot and had a go at making Sukkah huts of our own. We will soon be reading the Easter story and finding out how Easter is celebrated.

November 26th - your lighthouses look fantastic Class 3! Well done!
|

November 2021 - We've had plenty to keep us busy over the past couple of weeks, with our celebrations for Diwali and Children in Need. On Diwali Day, we enjoyed acting out the story of Rama and Sita, making cards and clay Diwa lamps and performing a traditional stick dance with Class 1 and 2 out on the playground! Last Friday, for Children in Need, it was lovely to see the children joining in with the activities that the older children had planned and prepared for them.
As we are now almost into December, we will choose a few children each week to bring a favourite Christmas/Winter story into school for us to share.

November 2021 - It's been a busy start to this half term and it was lovely to have the chance to speak to you at Parents Evening last week.
We have a new "Author in the Spotlight" this half term - Nick Butterworth, author of the Percy the Park keeper series, as well as many other books. If you have one of his books that you would like to share with us, we would love to see it.
The children have enjoyed learning about lighthouses and Grace Darling and the lighthouses they have made are fantastic! We're hoping to add some lights to them soon! This week, on Friday, we will be learning about Diwali and how it is celebrated. We looked at some photos of the Diwali lights in Leicester last week and the children are very enthusiastic, as always, to find out more!

Friday 15th October - Well done, Class 3! It's been a fun, busy half term and you have all been fantastic! You have worked hard and made us smile! Thank you. Have a great half term and we look forward to finding out what you've been up to when we come back!
We've shared some more lovely books and really enjoyed The National Literacy Trust's Take 10 event last Friday, encouraging everyone to read for 10 minutes a day. We listened to Tom Percival read some of his book, Silas and the Marvellous Misfits, and then enjoyed reading together. We read magazines, fiction, non-fiction and poetry, either on our own or with a friend. It was really lovely to see the children so enthusiastic about reading and we talked about how it made us feel. The children said it made them feel happy, excited and calm.

Friday 1st October - Over the past couple of weeks, we have been reading and writing about Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and writing our own prayers for Harvest. In Science, we did an investigation to find out what happens to chocolate when you heat it, then cool it. We all enjoyed the taste test!
We've looked at some more great non-fiction books too. Thank you. |
Friday 17th September - We've been busy counting in 2s, 5s and 10s this week, as well as testing different materials to find out which ones were waterproof.
Thank you for bringing in more books for us to share; both non-fiction this week. We enjoyed lifting-the-flaps to find out about our bodies and learning about spiders in "Wonderland"!

Friday 10th September - We shared another lovely book today, non-fiction this time, and we all learned a lot about the planets in our Solar System. There are some fantastic words being added to our Word Nerd Wall, too! Thank you.
Friday 3rd September - another great week! During the week, we've enjoyed mopping up puddles of water in Science to find out about absorbent materials and shared another two stories chosen by the children.
Well done for working so hard, Class 3!

Friday 27th August - the children have been brilliant at settling back in this week; polite and enthusiastic as always. They all deserved their Class Star of the Week! Thank you to the first two children who brought in their books for us to share today. It was lovely to read them. We'll choose two more children to show us their favourites next week.
Our PE lessons are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays this year and the children need to come into school in their PE kits on those days.
Thank you.
Autumn term 2021
Welcome to Class 3! It's been so lovely to see you all again this week and hear about what you've been up to over the Summer! We've chatted about all the things we're looking forward to about being in Year 2. One of the things a lot of the children mentioned was how much they're looking forward to being with their friends!
Our Topic for this term is Marvellous Creations and we'll be looking at the inventions of the Wright brothers and Edison to Wallace and Gromit! In Science, we'll be learning about materials and the children have already said how much they're looking forward to doing some experiments and investigations!
We'll have an "Author in the Spotlight" each half term, starting with Oliver Jeffers.
If you're reading at home and come across an impressive new word (a Wow word), that you think would be good to use in our writing, write it on a post-it note and bring it in to add to our "Word Nerd" board! If you could add what the word means, that would be even better!
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Can I just say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who brought in bits and pieces for us to make our bug hotels yesterday. We had a fantastic afternoon and such an array of different resources! The children loved coming up with their own, unique "hotels" and it was amazing to see them all so engrossed in what they were doing and really thinking about which resources would suit their design the best! There was a lot of teamwork going on, which was also lovely to see.
Some of the children took their hotels home and some have been put in the school grounds. If you would like to send a photo of your bug hotels in their new homes, please email them and I will add them to our display. I will add some photos here soon, too!
It has also been lovely to see the Minibeast/Habitat homework that has already been brought into school, from poems and stories to beautiful drawings and even a piece of music written to sound like Minibeasts. These are all being added to our display and the children are very proud of their work. We will keep adding things right up until half term.
Thanks again for your support.
May 2021
The children have been amazing over the past few weeks, working hard and being enthusiastic about the many different things we have been learning about.
This term in Geography, we are finding out about our local area and the children thoroughly enjoyed our walk around the village last week. We'll be finding out about other locations too, such as those by the coast and developing our map reading skills, as well as creating our own island maps. In Science, we are learning about habitats and microhabitats around the school grounds. We've loved minibeast hunting and have even planted some tomatoes and beans to see what they will attract, but hopefully nothing that will eat the produce!
Following our RE topic on celebrations last term, we are now finding out about special books and places in Islam. The children are brilliant at sharing their thoughts and ideas and listening to each other.
So far this term, we have been learning about shape, fractions and directions in maths, as well as going over addition and subtraction methods and showing the children how to use these skills to solve word problems. The Year 2s have also been going through their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The website that we use to practise these is www.timestables.co.uk and it would be great if the children could practise these at home, too.
We will be adding a few suggestions for ways that you can help with reading, phonics, writing and maths at home, as well as some ideas related to the topics we are covering at school. Below are some phonics activities, as well as tips on how to help with reading and writing at home. We'll keep adding more ideas throughout the term - but please don't feel you have to do them all!
Thank you all for your kind words and support over the year and if we can help in any way, please just ask.
