Class 4 - Miss Hamilton
January 2023
Welcome!
Welcome back to school Class 4! I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas holiday, I can't wait to see you all again and to hear about all of the things you got up to during the holidays! We will have loads of fun learning together this spring term. I am looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces walk into our classroom in January 2023!
We have a very busy term ahead of us as we continue to aim to provide a rich and varied experience for your children, and we will keep you all well informed of any activities taking place in school via the website and/or ParentMail. Please also see the calendar below, so you can keep important dates in your diary. I will try to keep these updated as much as possible.
Our topic in Geography this term half-term is Extreme Earth, in History next half-term we will be looking at The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China, and in Science we will be looking at Living things and their habitats. Our Art and DT projects will be linked to our topics, with a focus on making a working volcano this term! On Wednesday afternoon Mrs Scallon will be taking Class 4 for RE, focusing on 'how festivals and worship show what matters to a Muslim?'. Mr Riddell will be teaching PE on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. We will also be looking at various texts in English, including poetry, explanation texts and stories. A copy of the class timetable can be found below and subject planning is located in the 'Planning' section.
Reminders:
Could I remind all parents to make sure that their child comes to school IN their PE kit on PE days (Wednesday and Thursday). All children also need to have a pair of indoor shoes/plimsoles to change into. Children will need a waterproof coat and wellingtons or other waterproof shoes in wet weather, especially if they are playing on the field, as we will try to get outside as much as possible.
Please make sure ALL clothing and footwear is clearly labelled with your child's name.
Each child also needs a named drink bottle at school every day, as the water fountains cannot be used at the moment.
Homework:
Your child will receive regular homework. The homework will be linked to the work covered in school and is meant as a reinforcement and extension activity. Homework activities/suggestions can be found in the Homework Grid, where your child chooses an activity to complete for each of the hand in dates. There is also the option of completing additional activities to hand in as 'Going the Extra Mile' homework, but this is optional. Occasionally your child may also be asked to conduct research at home for a class project. There will also be weekly spellings, Times Tables and reading activities to complete. Feel free to support your child with this work, and I will endeavour to make the tasks as enjoyable as possible! The homework will also be set on Teams, and a copy can be found below for reference. Homework should be handed in on Mondays please.
Your child will be bringing reading books home to read at home only. You do not need to send these to school each day. If possible, we would like your child to read at least twice a week, either independently or to an adult, and for this to be recorded on the Go Read App. When you need new reading books, please return them to school and they will be replaced. Please remember to mark each book as complete on the Go Read App before returning it to school. Children are also able to log any reading they have done independently on the Go Read log, including books that they have at home.
There will be a small quantity of focus spellings each week, adhering to the spelling patterns and rules within the National Curriculum, as well as High Frequency and Common Exception words. These will be practised during class time, but a copy of the spellings will be put on Teams, as well as below for your information. Children will also bring a 'Look, Cover, Write, Check' sheet home each Friday to practise these spellings. Spelling tests will be conducted each Friday to enable the monitoring of progress. Children are expected to practise their spellings at home using the Spelling Shed website each week, as well as Look, Cover, Write, Check, including the two additional High Frequency words each week.
Children are also expected to complete Times Tables Rockstars activities each week as part of their homework. This is in preparation for the Times Tables Assessment that they will complete in Year 4.
I hope you all find this information useful, but if you have any concerns or questions, don't hesitate to ask, either via the class email (class4@wymeswold.leics.sch.uk) or in person at the school gates.
Thank you all,
Miss Hamilton
