Cross Country News
Just to let you all know that Max Hayward and Dominic Sturmey did so well at last night's trials they have won the right to compete in the area championships at Rutland Water on Saturday. Edward Thomas narrowly missed finishing in the first ten and is waiting to hear if he will be running as first reserve.
We are so proud of the achievements of all our runners, and I know we will be supporting them and wishing them well at the championships on Saturday. Well done all of you!

Social Networking - Facebook
It has come to our attention that many of our pupils have their own 'Facebook' accounts or other social networking pages.
Some of the children have even applied to be 'friends' with staff members. We would like to let parents know that no member of staff will accept these applications as we cannot be seen to condone children pretending to be older than they are in order to get a 'Facebook' account. Facebook stipulate that in order to have an account young people need to be 13 or over. Having chatted informally to some of our children they know this and have altered their date of birth in order to get accepted. I cannot stress how dangerous it is for young children to be lying about their age on these sites, as we know it's not necessarily about what they are doing but it is about who is watching them and contacting them.

Thursday, 14th January - The school is open.
We are open today, as the roads are much better and all of us can access school much more safely.
However, the paths and pavements around school are still treacherous in places, so if you are in any doubt about access from where you are, please stay at home.

Irritated by the Ice
We kept open all last week during the snow, but we are most frustrated to have been beaten by the ice.
I must appologise for the late notice for parents, but the circumstances were most unusual.
We had no idea that the roads and pavements and playgrounds would be so bad as it just looked wet on the roads.
By the time I realised travel was so appalling, I was stuck between Grantham and Waltham on the Wolds between two serious accidents and had no phone signal.
Once I had phone contact, I was able to get in touch with staff who had made it through to school and made the decision to put staff and family safety our top priority and to close the school.
Thanks to all of you who were so flexible and quick to pick up your children and get them home to warmth and safety.
I managed to arrive at school for 9.30, just in time to see some of our children and parents struggling to stay upright on the pavement. It had taken me two hours to get to work and I had passed 7 vehicles newly crashed into hedges and ditches at the side of the road. The fire brigade and ambulances weaving through the sliding cars to attend the accidents.
It is lethal out there.
I will not take the roads for granted tomorrow and will get out even earlier to see if they are passable. If the roads are similar tomorrow, I will try to let parents know as early as possible.

Friday snow update
As yesterday, we aim to be open. Staff have done an amazing job at getting to work, under very tough conditions!
Please be aware that it is still extremely icy underfoot, so if you have any concerns about travelling in or getting back home - my advice is stay put in the warm.

Virtual Learning Environment
If your child is in KS2, they will have a 'log in' code for the school Virtual Learning Environment or VLE for short.
This is a learning portal for communication between home and school, and although in its very early stages, it is gradually being populated as we train staff and children to use it.
If you wish to access this resource at home, you need to go to www.fronter.com/leicestershire and type in your child's log in details.
We have stressed to the children that internet safety is paramount so they are not to share their log in code or password with others including older siblings.
We will give you further details as the VLE expands and we start to use it formally for home learning.
