Wymeswold School was first opened in 1777 by Joseph Thomson. In 1835 the town school in the north east of the church yard was demolished. Three years later an infant school was built on the corner of Wysall Lane and Far Street.
In 1845 a national school was built on Far Street opposite the church and it was on this site that the school remained until it moved to its present site on Brook Street. The new school was built in two phases; the first phase was built in 1979 followed by the second phase in 1984. It is situated on the southern side of the village well away from traffic and surrounded by open fields – a beautiful spot.
The two old school buildings are now houses.
We would love to find out more about the history of the school. Do you have memories that you could share with us? Can you remember moving to the new school? Do you have any amusing tales to tell about school life? Have you any photos that we can scan for our Memories page?
We would love to hear from you.
